ULTRAM® (tramadol hydrochloride) tablets is a centrally acting analgesic. The chemical name for tramadol hydrochloride is (±)cis-2-[(dimethylamino)methyl]-1-(3methoxyphenyl) cyclohexanol hydrochloride. Its structural formula is:

The molecular weight of tramadol hydrochloride is 299.8. Tramadol hydrochloride is a white, bitter, crystalline and odorless powder. It is readily soluble in water and ethanol and has a pKa of 9.41. The n-octanol/water log partition coefficient (logP) is 1.35 at pH 7. ULTRAM® tablets contain 50 mg of tramadol hydrochloride and are white in color. Inactive ingredients in the tablet are pregelatinized corn starch, modified starch (corn), hypromellose, lactose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polysorbate 80, sodium starch glycolate, titanium dioxide and carnauba wax.

Tramadol is a narcotic-like pain reliever. Tramadol is used to treat moderate to severe pain. Tramadol extended-release is used to treat moderate to severe chronic pain when treatment is needed around the clock. Tramadol may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide. Tramadol is an analgesic. It works in certain areas of the brain and nervous system to decrease pain.

Tramadol hydrochloride (Ultram) is prescribed to relieve moderate to moderately severe pain.

Tramadol Hydrochloride 37.5 mg/Acetaminophen 325 mg tablets combine two analgesics, tramadol 37.5 mg and acetaminophen 325 mg. The chemical name for acetaminophen is N-acetyl-p-aminophenol. Its structural formula is:

The molecular weight of acetaminophen is 151.17. Acetaminophen is an analgesic and antipyretic agent which occurs as a white, odorless, crystalline powder, possessing a slightly bitter taste.

Tramadol Hydrochloride 37.5 mg/Acetaminophen 325 mg tablets contain 37.5 mg tramadol hydrochloride and 325 mg acetaminophen and are light yellow in color. Inactive ingredients in the tablet are powdered cellulose, pregelatinized corn starch, sodium starch glycolate, corn starch, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, polyethylene glycol, polysorbate 80, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, and carnauba wax.

 Tramadol is generic name of ultram. Ultracet Tablets combines tramadol 37.5 mg and acetaminophen 325 mg.

Do NOT use Tramadol if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Tramadol
  • you have had a severe allergic reaction (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue) to codeine or other opioids (eg, morphine)
  • you are intoxicated with alcohol, other opioids or narcotics (eg, codeine, morphine), sedatives or sleeping medicines (eg, temazepam, zolpidem), or other medicines
  • you have severe liver or kidney problems
  • you are taking carbamazepine, nefazodone, sodium oxybate (GHB), a thioxanthene (eg, thiothixene), or another product that contains tramadol

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

What are the possible side effects of tramadol (Ultram, Ultram ER)? 

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using tramadol and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

  • seizure (convulsions);
  • a red, blistering, peeling skin rash; or
  • shallow breathing, weak pulse.

Less serious side effects may include:

  • dizziness, drowsiness, weakness;
  • nausea, vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite;
  • blurred vision;
  • flushing (redness, warmth, or tingly feeling); or
  • sleep problems (insomnia).
